Helpful Hints
At BuildOhio.com we've already done most of the homework for you, but here are some more tips that will help you plan a successful project:
    Avoid Remodelers when...
  • You can't verify the name, address, telephone number or credentials of the remodeler
  • The salesperson tries to pressure you into signing a contract
  • No references are furnished
  • Information you receive from a remodeler is out-of-date or invalid
  • Unable to verify license or insurance information
  • You are asked to pay entire job in advance, or to pay in cash to a salesperson instead of by check or money order to the company itself
  • The company cannot be found in the telephone book

    And be cautious when...
  • You are given vague or reluctant answers
  • The contractor exhibits poor communication skills or descriptive powers
  • You find the contractor is not accessible
  • Your questions are not answered to your satisfaction
  • the contractor is impatient and does not listen
  • Only the work is addressed, instead of your needs as the homeowner
  • There is no presentation book of previous projets presented

    Did you know?
  • That you are allowed to cancel the contract within three days. Notification in writing of your Right of Recision is required by law. This grace period allows you to change your min and declare the contract null and void without penalty if the agreement was solicited at some place other than the contractor's place of business or appropriate trade premises - in your home, for instance.

    Ask these questions...
  • If a permit is needed, are they registered with the local building departments?
  • Who will be on the job at all times?
  • Who is responsible for trash and cleanup? And don't forget to…
  • Check your credentials with the local building departments.
  • Make sure you have a contract that states when the job will start and how long it will take.
  • A written estimate should describe all aspects of the job including drawings, materials used, financial arrangements and date of completion.
  • Ask when percentages of money are due. Most will ask for a percentage upfront to cover materials. Get documentation on all cost overruns.
  • Make sure you have all permits before work begins.
  • Make sure work is completed to your approval before final payment is made.
  • Use photos from magazines and books that can show the contractor exactly what you are looking for.
  • Verify that they are insured or bonded!! Ask for a "Certificate of Insurance."
